Wildlife in South Mountain Park
There are many different species of cacti and desert plants, which include the iconic Arizona native, the saguaro cactus. If you’re there in the right season you will see the vegetation in full bloom and if you’re lucky enough you may even spot a chuckwalla. “What on earth is a Chuckwalla?” Chuckwalla is large desert iguanas and South Mountain Park actually has the densest population of these reptiles ever recorded. If that’s not weird enough, you may also see a Gila monster. A beast of a lizard with a bad reputation for being super aggressive and also for having a venomous bite.
