Getting to Oyama Lookout

During our online search on Google Maps, we stumbled upon the Oyama Lookout. Fortunately, reaching this destination is quite straightforward. Our chosen approach was to park at the base of Oyama Lake Road, located near the popular Oyama Zip-Line. From there, we embraced a 5 km walk along the road. Alternatively, if you possess a capable vehicle (not a car), it is possible to drive the entire distance. Throughout our hike, we discovered various trails meandering through the captivating woods, offering opportunities for shortcuts. However, it's important to note that this is not an officially designated hiking trail, hence there are no markers guiding the way to the lookout. Despite this, our group opted for a gratifying hike, making the ascent on foot. The entire journey lasted approximately 3 hours, encompassing our leisurely round trip on foot.

As we embarked on our hike, the solitude of the trail was immediately apparent. No vehicles passed us, and we encountered no fellow hikers along the way. The sense of isolation grew with every step we took. It wasn't until we reached a distance of about 2 kilometers when we spotted the last house and traces of human presence. A mix of relief and unease settled upon us at that moment.

Perhaps it was our own imaginations playing tricks on us, fueled by the countless bear attack reenactment movies we had watched over the years. The looming silence and absence of any signs of human activity had a way of heightening our senses and filling our minds with a touch of uneasiness. Every snapping twig or rustling leaf seemed to magnify our awareness of the wilderness surrounding us.

But amidst this eerie atmosphere, nature unveiled her stunning display of colors. We were fortunate to have chosen mid-May, which coincides with the wildflower season in the Okanagan. The blossoms adorned the landscape with their vibrant hues, painting a breathtaking tableau before our eyes. It was a stark reminder that even in the midst of isolation, beauty could be found.

The Okanagan Valley, stands out as a unique and exceptional region characterized by its arid and hot climate. Unlike any other part of the country, this region boasts a hardiness zone of 6a, which limits the growth of numerous plants elsewhere in Canada. Consequently, the Okanagan Valley becomes a haven for a diverse array of fruits, vegetables, and wines that thrive in this distinct microclimate, making it a prime destination for cultivation.

Once at the top of Oyama Lookout, you will be able to walk out onto a rocky cliff and have a great view, but you won’t see the wooden platform from the main vantage point. To reach the platform you will have to hike down a little trail to the right that will lead you to the platform.
