Bacalar Lagoon, México
About Bacalar Lagoon, Quintana Roo, Mexico
Bacalar Lagoon (Laguna de Bacalar) is a 42 km (26 mi) long freshwater lake that is located in the state of Quintana Roo, Mexico near the border of Belize. The lake is fairly narrow being less than 2 km (1.2 mi) at its widest point. It is the largest lake in the Yucatan Peninsula and one of the largest in Mexico.
Though once unknown to the public, the Bacalar Lagoon is starting to become quite the popular travel destination, and for good reason as it may be one of the most spectacular bodies of water on earth. Visitors looking for great accommodations and restaurants will find what they are looking for in the towns of Bacalar and Buenavista, both of which lie on the shores of the lagoon. In Bacalar, visitors will find a whole host of beach clubs and resorts that serve food and drinks and charge a daily fee to use the amenities.
The Bacalar Lagoon is definitely one of a kind and is perhaps most sought-after because of its mind-blowing blue colors and crystal clear water. The glistening turquoise water can be partly attributed to the pure white sand and limestone bottom. Similar to other lakes in the Yucatán peninsula, the lagoon is fed by several cenotes that are part of the world’s largest 450 km (279 mi) underground river system. Another interesting fact about the lake is that it is home to some of the oldest organisms on earth called stromatolites. These ancient organisms are said to exist in only two locations, the other being Hamelin Pool in Western Australia. Along with those organisms, the lake is also home to a few unique species of freshwater fish.
