About Salmon Arm
Salmon Arm is a small and idyllic city that is located in the Shuswap region of British Columbia, Canada. It has a relatively small population of around 20,000 people and is the largest city in the Shuswap. A very popular tourist spot and in the summer months, Salmon Arm attracts visitors from all over who come to enjoy the city’s beautiful scenery, beaches, campsites, and houseboat rentals. Aside from lovely beaches, Salmon Arm offers a plethora of different hiking trails giving adventure enthusiasts the opportunity to explore the region even further and experience some of the breathtaking views.
Salmon Arm is also home to the longest wooden wharf built on freshwater in all of North America. The wharf has become quite an attraction for locals and tourists alike. In the evening people flock to the wharf to watch one of the spectacular sunsets that occur over beautiful Shuswap Lake.
History of Salmon Arm
The name Salmon Arm is derived from the arm of the lake where the city lies and the many salmon that were once abundant in the area. The region and its surrounding wilderness areas were traditionally the territories of the Secwépemc First Nations people. The region wasn’t thoroughly explored and settled by Europeans until the construction of the Canadian Pacific Railway in September 1885. Miners eventually came to the area in search of gold and by the end of the 1890s, the town grew to 200 people and had two general stores, a school, and a hotel.

Canoe Beach
Canoe Beach sits on the beautiful shores of Shuswap Lake. The beach is technically not in Salmon Arm, but rather it is located in the nearby village of Canoe. It is one of the most picture-perfect white-sand beaches in the Shuswap region. The beach features ample picnic space, lots of amenities, and spectacular mountain views, making this beach the perfect day trip for swimming, paddleboarding, and kayaking.Sunybrae Park
Sunnybrae Park is situated in the small lakeside community of Sunnybrae and is a favorite beach getaway for Salmon Arm locals. It features a great family picnic area, a parking lot, as well as convenient flush toilets, and a playground for the kids.Wild Rose Bay
Wild Rose Bay is a beautiful and quiet park that is located on Eagle Bay Road. The park features a hiking trail system that leads down to the beach. The beach itself is quite rocky but provides excellent views of Shuswap Lake.

Hiking Trails In Salmon Arm
Siphon Falls Trail
Syphon Falls Trail is a 0.8-mile out and back trail located near Salmon Arm, British Columbia, Canada that features a waterfall. The trail is good for all skill levels and is primarily used for hiking, walking, and nature trips. This is a wonderful, short trail with a bit of a rock scramble right near the top.Foreshore/Raven Trail
The Raven Trail is located in Salmon Arm, British Columbia, and features a flat 3 km trail with a wooden boardwalk and viewing platforms for bird watching. The area is one of the best bird-watching spots in the Shuswap region and is up there as one of the best in all of BC. The trail leads walkers through a migratory estuary and boasts a nice side trail that heads over a seasonal land bridge out to Christmas Island. The island is home to several species of Shuswap Lake waterfowl and is part of a network of trails called the Salmon Arm Nature Bay Trails.South Canoe Trail System
The South Canoe Trail System is a series of trails that is used by mountain bikers, hikers, and horse riders. It is a fairly busy hiking area and offers access to the Larch Hills trail system. Park Hill provides some of the newer hiking trails in the Salmon Arm area and provides hikers and bikers with a variety of single-track trail loops. In particular, be sure to check out the Holmes (Centre) trail, which links to the Outer Loop and Sansom’s Trail.Mount Ida Loop
Mount Ida Loop is a lengthy 35.2-kilometer moderately difficult loop trail that features breathtaking views and a lovely waterfall. The trail is also dog-friendly as long as they are kept on a leash.Coyote Park Outer Loop

The Turner Creek Trail connects McGuire Lake Park to Okanagan College and the Rec Center. The trail leads hikers to some small picturesque ponds that are a great place for wildlife watching and spotting turtles hanging out on logs. The trail is 2.5 km one way and is moderately difficult.
