Hike to Yelapa Waterfall
About Yelapa Waterfall, Jalisco, Mexico
The quaint village of Yelapa is situated in the state of Jalisco, Mexico, and is the home of 2 spectacular jungle waterfalls. The difference between the two is that one of them is only a short 10-minute walk from town, while the other is a 90-minute trek that leads deep into the jungle and involves several river crossings. Most people who visit Yelapa only get to see the easiest waterfall called Cascada de Yelapa. In this article, we will cover the furthest falls which don’t seem to have a real name, so we’ll refer to them as the Yelapa Waterfall.
To reach the Yelapa Waterfall requires a 4.9-mile (7.8 km) hike round trip along a path through the gorgeous Jalisco jungle. The trail is well marked and has many signs along the path to indicate the right direction. The path meanders along farmlands on the south side of the Tuito River for a while eventually leading hikers into a thick tropical forest.

How to Get to Yelapa Waterfall
To access the head of the trail you will need to walk to the eastern part of town to Calle Marlin until you find the Tuito River. Shortly into your hike, you will see a footbridge crossing the river but only cross the bridge if it is on your right side, if it’s on you’re left side just continue straight on the path. At around 0.7 miles (1.12 km) into your hike, you’ll reach the first river crossing, where you will have to be brave and push your fears aside. If you visit in the midst of the rainy season, then you may not be able to cross the river. The second river crossing comes about 1 mile after the first. From here, the trail winds through the lush jungle until you reach the waterfall. Depending on the time of year and water levels you may be able to swim under the falls.
