History

Revelstoke’s European history goes back to the 1880s when the Canadian Pacific Railway (CPR) was built and allowed access to the area. The town boomed in the early days as it was part of a successful mining industry era. The original name of Revelstoke was Farwell, after a local pioneer. The small city was eventually named after a man named Lord Revelstoke, who was head of Baring Brothers & Co., which was a UK investment bank. Lord Revelstoke singlehandedly saved the Canadian Pacific Railway from complete bankruptcy in 1885 when he bought the company's unsold bonds.

The eventual construction of the Trans-Canada Highway increased access to the area allowing for tourism to become a big part of the local economy and activities like hiking and skiing are enjoyed by visitors of Revelstoke.
