3 Tips for Traveling Solo in Summer

Traveling solo is undoubtedly one of the most thrilling ways to go on a trip. After all, when you're not traveling with people who encourage you to stay in your comfort zone, you're much more likely to strike up conversations with strangers, and fly by the seat of your pants.

Yet, traveling alone requires a little bit of extra preparation. After all, since you’re the main organizer and director of your trip, it's up to you to prepare ahead of time. Traveling in summer offers its own unique set of challenges due to various reasons. If you're planning a solo trip in the summer, here are some tips to make your trip enjoyable and stress-free.

Choose The Right Accommodation

Even though you'll likely be spending the majority of your trip sightseeing and getting from one place to another, where you'll stay will play an important role in how much you enjoy your trip.

If it's extremely hot in the destination you're going to, you want to make sure you have air conditioning and of course that you're close to any sites you plan on visiting. Staying too far away from the main tourist attractions can be a headache when trying to walk or navigate public transportation.  If you plan on storing drinks and food at your accommodation make sure that you have a working refrigerator in the place you stay.

Some destinations are better suited for Airbnb, while others offer better hotels. Make sure that you research both options and choose accordingly so that you're not only comfortable but that you also get the best possible price.

Pack Lightly

When you travel solo you're going to be moving around a lot. That's why you want to make it as easy as possible on yourself. Instead of packing everything you could ever possibly need and then some—pack lightly!  Simplify your life and only bring the essentials.

Remember, most things can be replaced, with the exception of important medication or expensive technology. Consider buying whatever you need at your destination rather than hauling it all with you. You won't just save yourself from a sore back and neck, but you'll also spare yourself excess baggage fees.

Stay Connected

Perhaps one of the biggest concerns with traveling alone, particularly if you're a female, is the safety factor. You want to make sure that you have a way of staying connected regardless of where you are. Make sure you have a working telephone with you, and of course that you have any copies of your important identification information. Photocopy your passport, and then of course any return tickets home. In the event that you should lose your phone, you should also have a copy of your emergency contacts printed separately so you know you can stay in touch if anything goes wrong.
