Playa Mismaloya is a beach located in the small town of Mismaloya in the beautiful state of Jalisco, Mexico. It is situated on the shores of the picturesque Bay of Banderas and has a stunning backdrop of dense green jungles that creep their way up to the vast Sierra Madre mountain range. The village is small with a population of only 561 people, though it does have an influx of tourists in the high season who arrive on tour buses from the city. it is a popular destination for those visiting Puerto Vallarta who want a quieter Jalisco experience and want to enjoy nature.

Playa Mismaloya played a huge role in the tourism industry of Puerto Vallarta that exists today when in 1964 the filming of the movie titled Night of the Iguana took place and exposed the world to the beauty of Jalisco. Created by writer Tennesse Williams and directed by John Huston, both of whom were superstars of the day but probably had no idea about how much their movie would change the fortunes of the region. The movie sparked interest and inspired both adventure seekers as well as celebrities to start visiting the area and thus caused an explosion in its popularity and created the tourism destination we see today.
At Playa Mismaloya, visitors will enjoy access to several beachfront restaurants, where they can buy cold cervezas (beer), cocktails, and fresh-grilled seafood. There is a river that empties out into the bay that beachgoers will have to wade through to get to the beach, there is another option of walking down to the small rope bridge and crossing the river from there. There is also a walking trail and an old road at the southern end of the beach that was designed specifically for the Night of the Iguana movie, here one can find the remains of the old movie set.
